Fans Flocking to SoonerCon 24 This Weekend
By Charles Clark
Less than two hours from Lawton this weekend will be the state’s premier event for fans of science fiction, fantasy, horror and mystery. SoonerCon 24 runs June 26-28 in Midwest City. It is Oklahoma’s oldest and longest-running such event run by local fans. Those who enjoy the genres will not only be coming from every part of the Sooner State, but from several nearby states. Thousands of registrations are again expected. One part of the convention, the $75 Friends of SoonerCon membership, is sold out.
Nearing its quarter-century mark, SoonerCon 24 will showcase three days of actors, voice actors, panel discussions with authors, art demonstrations and workshops, and an art show and sale.
Always a popular event is the masquerade costume contest, and a special added event this year, The Wrecking Ball – a Friday evening dance with live music. A vendors’ hall will allow those attending to seek out collectible books, comics, posters, toys and more.
For fans that plan to save sleeping until after the convention, there will be around-the-clock gaming and classic film screenings.
Presenters attending will be this year’s Literary Guest of Honor: Elizabeth Moon (author of Vatta’s War series, Paladin’s Legacy series); Artist Guest of Honor: Lubov (artist of Magic: The Gathering and Galactic Empires); Young Author Guest of Honor: Rachel Caine (Morganville Vampires series), and more. Among featured guests will be Robert Picardo (star of TV’s Star Trek: Voyager and Stargate); Jamie Marchi (of Witchblade and Soul Eater fame); also the knowledgeable and always entertaining “Dr. Trek”, author Larry Nemecek.
In addition to the fun and games, SoonerCon raises funds for local charities. After the 2014 convention, SoonerCon made a donation of $4,000 to NAMI Oklahoma, the state chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness.
SoonerCon 24 will open at 10 a.m. Friday and conclude at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Reed Conference Center and Sheraton Hotel, 5800 Will Rogers Rd., Midwest City.
Assuming travel will be by a gasoline-powered land vehicle and not cellular transport, take the H.E. Bailey Turnpike from Lawton to Oklahoma City. Exit onto I-40 East to Midwest City. Exit onto Sooner Road, which intersects with Will Rogers Road.
Advance admission tickets are $20 daily or $40 for a three-day pass by going online to http://www.soonercon.com or facebook.com/SoonerConSciFiExpo. Tickets will also be available at the door. Die hard fans of Picardo may also purchase admission for $150 to a Saturday evening cocktail party to meet and greet the actor.
