RICHARDSON, Texas – The annual Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athlete Award winners were announced earlier this month with 21 student-athletes honored by league officials, including two 2018 Aggie seniors.
Mateo Velasco of CU men’s tennis and Annie Combs of the Black and Gold softball team. They were selected, along with the other 21 honorees, as representatives of the outstanding accomplishments in athletics, scholarship and leadership that are displayed on each LSC campus during the year.
Velasco was named a LSC Co-Sportsmanship Player of the Year and was an honorable mention singles player during his final year with the Aggies. The Cali, Columbia native went 6-12 in singles and 12-8 in doubles play during the spring. Velasco was also an All-LSC and All-American doubles player in 2017. He was a key part of the LSC and South Central Regional Championship team as a junior.
Combs just wrapped up her final season wearing the Black and Gold as she helped the Aggies reach the NCAA South Central Regional final in early May. The Tuttle, Okla. product had a breakout her in 2018, batting .318 with eight homers, 12 doubles, and 31 RBI. Combs started every game at the hot corner for CU in the past three seasons and was awarded with a second team All-South Central Region and third team All-LSC selection as a senior.
To be eligible for consideration for the Scholar-Athlete Awards, student-athletes must have participated in at least two years in their sport and be a member of the graduating class.
