SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Cameron softball team swept their first day at the St. Mary’s College Classic on Friday, as they beat Fort Hays State, 3-2 in eight innings, and then won in a 10-0 run rule over St. Edward’s in the nightcap.

Game one against Fort Hays State, Rylee Willmon had a near dominant performance in the circle. The junior gave up just six hits in eight innings of work while striking out six batters. However, her performance was matched by the Tigers’ pitcher, who struck out 12 Aggies in her 7.1 innings of work.

FHSU took a 1-0 lead on a solo homer in the top of the fifth and then doubled their lead with an RBI double in the seventh. The Aggies came up clutch in the bottom of the seventh and scored a pair of runs on back-to-back singles by Raley Long and Madyson Marvulli.

After Willmon retired the side in order in the eighth, Cameron took advantage of the extra inning placed runner rule as Callie Busby was placed at second to start the inning. Bethany Hines then walked and Brenna Busbymoved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt. Kaylyn Smith then came up and reached on an error by the Tigers’ second basemen, which allowed C. Busby to score from third and end the game.

The Aggies bats were hot in the second game as they struck for 10 runs on nine hits for a five inning run-rule win. Marvulli hit a three run homer in the first to get things started. CU then struck for five runs in the second thanks to RBI singles from Kaitlyn Alvarado and C. Busby and a two RBI sacrifice fly by Annie Combs.

Hines and Alyssa Osterdock combined for a three hit shutout while stifling the Hilltopper hitters.

Marvulli finished the day 3-3 with five RBI while C. Busby had three hits and scored four runs in the two game sweep.

Cameron will back in action tomorrow at the St. Mary’s Classic as they take on Regis at 12:15 p.m. and then the host, St. Mary’s, at 4:45 p.m.
