Men’s tennis takes two doubles flights at Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Aggie men’s tennis program won two doubles flights and had two players reach the singles flight finals to highlight the team’s showing at the Midwestern State Invitational.

In flight-four, the pairing of Dennis Merdan and Bruno Babic swept their opponents 8-0 on Friday afternoon and later won again 8-5.   On Saturday, the pair opened with a tight 8-7 win to advance to the finals to face Tyler Junior College where the CU duo would take the flight with an 8-4 victory.  CU’s other duo consisting of Joao Fazendeiro and Daniel Ferl picked an easy 8-1 win to start play on Friday. They got a bye and then won 8-1 over Midwestern State a day later to advance to the finals.  The Aggie pair won 8-7 after facing St. Edward’s in a tightly contested match.

Both Fazendeiro and Babic reached their flight’s singles final but would fall after winning three matches.  Fazendeiro lost 6-4, 6-2 to Midwestern State and Babic fell to Northwest Missouri State 6-4, 2-6 (10-8).

Andres Velasco in flight-nine won twice on Friday, taking his first match in straight sets. Later he would rally back to win 2-6, 6-2 (10-7).  However, Velasco would drop his first match on Saturday by retirement 6-0,4-0.  Mateo Velasco in flight-four won his first match on Friday 3-6, 6-4(10-8) but fell out in the afternoon by retirement 7-6, 1-0.

In flight-eight, Ferl split his matches on Friday by winning his first 6-1, 6-2 over Northwest Missouri State and would best Southwestern Oklahoma 6-1, 6-3 on Saturday to go 2-1 for the weekend.

The Cameron men will continue individual play with the ITA Regionals on Sept. 25-27 in San Antonio, Texas.
