CU makes the trip west to battle the Greyhounds

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University baseball team continues their start to the Lone Star Conference season as they visit Eastern New Mexico for a four game series, March 29-31.

The Series:
Cameron’s four game series against the Greyhounds will begin with a single, nine inning contest beginning at 8 p.m. (CT) on Thursday, and will continue on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. (CT). The series will conclude on Saturday with another single, nine inning game starting at 2 p.m. (CT).

About the Aggies:
The Aggies enter the series with an 11-16 overall record and a 1-3 LSC mark. They most recently dropped three out of four games against No. 24 Angelo State. After losing game one in a slugfest, 13-8, the two teams split a pair of seven inning doubleheaders, with CU winning 5-2 thanks to a strong outing from Gaige Vines. ASU then went on to take the final two games of the series, 3-0 and 8-1.

At the plate, Cameron is hitting .252 with 135 runs scored and 57 extra base hits, including 12 homeruns. Luke Hughes leads the team with a .326 average, while Cole Williams is batting .313 with 21 RBI. Williams is tied league lead in doubles and is tied with Colton Adams with a CU best three homers. Additionally, Trey Bigford leads the team with 23 runs scored and is batting .274, as Adams and Hughes both lead the Black and Gold with 11 stolen bases.

Cameron’s pitching staff has a combined ERA of 6.57 with 161 strikeouts in 213.2 innings. Andrew Garza has an ERA of 5.04 with a CU best 38 strikeouts in 44.2 innings, while Reid Garrett is 4-2 with a 4.53 ERA and 33 Ks in 43.2 innings of work.  

A Look at the Greyhounds:
The Greyhounds are now 14-10 on the season and opened league play by being swept in a four game series by West Texas A&M. They have played just six games at home, going 1-5 in Portales. ENMU is batting .331 on the season with 205 runs scored and 89 extra base hits, including 29 homers. They also lead the LSC with 105 stolen bases and on the mound have a team ERA of 4.92 in 183 innings with 179 strikeouts.

Individually, Julian Heredia leads the team at the plate, batting .410 with six homers and 33 RBI, while Alex DeLaCruz is hitting .398 with a team best 35 hits and 22 RBI. Six other Greyhounds are hitting over .330, including Chris Padilla, who has an ENMU best eight homers. Additionally, Endy Villalona leads the conference with 29 stolen bases. On the bump, Cesar Capellan is the staff ace, going 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 32.2 innings of work. Jonathan Joy is also 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA in 24.2 innings, while Keenan Dodd is 3-2 with 26 Ks and a 3.55 ERA in 25.1 innings of work.

The Aggies will be back at home for their next four game series as they host UT Permian Basin, April 6-8.
