LAWTON – The Cameron baseball team will travel to Laredo, Texas this weekend for a three game series against Texas A&M-International.
It will be the Dustdevil’s opening weekend as the Aggies already completed theirs with a 2-1 series win over Southwestern Oklahoma State last week.
On CU’s opening day, Andrew Garza gave a dominating performance on the mound, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing just one run and seven hits while striking out seven en route to a 9-2 Aggie victory. Cole Williams and Colton Adams homered in that game.
After falling 6-4 in game two, Cameron bounced back with 11 runs in the final game to secure the series win. Trey Bigford led CU with six hits while Williams had a team best five RBI on five hits.
TAMUI was predicted to finish eighth in the Heartland Conference Preseason poll. The Dustdevils went 12-32 last season missing postseason play.
They return All-Heartland Conference First Team outfielder Alex Cabezas who batted .364 last season and drove in 24 runs on 38 hits. Second baseman Rito Astorga joins him as one of three starters from last year who hit above .300; he also had a team best .526 slugging percentage.
For the Dustdevil’s pitching staff, ace Kyle Kieschnick enters his senior campaign after a troublesome 2017 on the mound where he posted a 7.71 ERA and had two wins and 13 losses.
Last season Cameron swept the Dustdevils in a three game series, outscoring them 44-20 during the weekend.
In that series some returning Aggies for this season had success as Micah Kaaukai recorded nine RBI, Williams homered and totaled five hits and Gaige Vines earned a win pitching six innings while giving up just one run on four hits.
