PORTALES, N.M. – The Cameron University baseball team hung on to earn the 6-5 win over Eastern New Mexico on Thursday night.
The Aggies got on the board first in the third inning, as Colton Adams came in to score on an error by the Greyhound catcher after stealing third. Trey Bigford then came up to the plate and drove in Nik Sanchez on an RBI double to left center.
In the fourth, Adams produced another run for CU, this time with his bat, as he drove in Micah Kaaukai on a single up the middle to give his team the 3-0 lead. However, ENMU responded with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to just one run.
Cameron kept up their scoring trend in the fifth inning, scoring three runs to extend their lead out to four runs. Kaaukai kicked off the inning by driving in Bigford, and then Adams delivered again, driving in a pair on another RBI base hit.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Eastern New Mexico answered with their own three run inning in the seventh, get back to within one.
Fortunately for the Aggies, Skyler Henderson was dominant in the final 2.2 innings, securing the 6-5 win for the Black and Gold.
Adams led CU with two hits and three RBI at the plate, while five other Aggies recorded one hit. Cameron left seven runners on base.
On the mound, Gaige Vines earned his second win of the season, going 6.1 and giving up four earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Henderson earned the save, his second of the year, not giving up a hit while facing the final 11 batters.
Cameron moves to 12-16 on the year and 2-3 in league play, while ENMU is now 14-11 overall and 0-5 in conference games.
The two teams will tee it up again tomorrow as they play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. (C.T.).
